    • Questionnaire
    • This basic knowledge questionnaire will help us evaluate some basic critical thinking skills as they relate to the position for which you are applying.

The scoring will remain private, will not be reported, and does not determine your overall eligibility for the desired position.  If you don't know the answer, just pick the option you think would most likely be correct.

    • 1.) You have to cut a piece of EMT conduit in the field. After cutting, what is the first thing you need to do?
    • 1.) You have to cut a piece of copper in the field. After cutting, what is the first thing you need to do?
    • 1.) It takes Johnny 30 minutes to replace the filters in 1 AC unit. At this same rate, how many units of can he service in 2.5 hours?
    • 1.) It takes Johnny 30 minutes to run 30 feet of conduit. At this same rate, how many feet of conduit can he run in 2.5 hours?
    • 1.) It takes Johnny 30 minutes to dig 10 ft of a trench. At this same rate, how many feet of a trench will he have dug in 2.5 hours?
    • 2.) What does superheat mean?
    • 2.)  While on the job, you encounter an unmarked panelboard that Bootleg Electric installed, so the wires feeding the panel are not colored, and have no phasing tape on them.  To determine the voltage of the system, you use your meter to check voltage, and you get the following nominal readings:

                      A to ground – 120V

                      B to ground – 208V

                      C to ground – 120V

    • Based on these readings, what type of electrical system is feeding this panel?
    • 2.) When figuring a 45° offset, which of these is the correct multiplier to use?
    • 2.)  A client has called in a problem with their AC not coming on.  When you arrive at the jobsite, what would be probably be the MOST APPROPRIATE first action to take in troubleshooting?
    • 2.)  The National Electrical Code states that no more than 360° of bends may be made in any one run of conduit between junction boxes.  If Travis needs to make bends in his conduit run to bypass obstacles, and he ALREADY has a 90° bend, what is the MAXIMUM number of 30° bends he can make before he needs to set a junction box?
    • 2.) Travis needs to lay pipe in a trench that his coworker dug. If he has to run 360 total feet of pipe, and he ALREADY has 60 feet worth of pipe, how many 20-foot pieces of pipe does he need to order from the supply house?
    • 3.)  Extension ladders must be set up properly in order to be considered safe to use. This rule is a 4:1 ratio. For every 4 feet the ladder must reach upwards, the feet/base must be set 1 foot out from the wall. For example, if the ladder must reach 16 feet high, the ladder feet/base should be set 4 feet out from the wall.

    • If Jim needs to use an extension ladder to reach 32 feet up the wall, how many feet out from the wall should the base of the ladder be?  Hint:  1 foot out for every 4 feet up.
    • 4.)  The person running the project you’re on has asked you to drill holes in several steel beams, which poses a safety hazard due to the potential of hot metal scraps flying out while drilling. Which of the following would be the most appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) to use while performing this task?

    • 5.) You have just spent 8 long hours working on a task assigned to you by the person running the job that you're on. As you finish up the day, you realize that you made several mistakes, but aren't quite sure how to fix them. What would be the most appropriate approach to take in this situation?
    • 6.)  While on the job, you encounter a unit that Bootleg HVAC installed, so the wires feeding the unit are not colored, and have no phasing tape on them.  The labels are worn and faded, leaving them unreadable. To determine the voltage of the system, you use your meter to check voltage, and you get the following nominal readings:

                      A to ground – 120V                          A to B – 208V

                      B to ground – 120V                          A to C – 208V

                      C to ground – 120V                          B to C – 208V

    • Based on these readings, what type of electrical system is feeding this unit?
    • 6.) You are working at a client's office building and you need to install a 30A circuit for a copier. What would be the proper COPPER wire size to install for this circuit?
    • 6.) True or False: An acceptable air gap must be twice the supply pipe diameter, but never less than 1 inch.
    • 6.) You’ve been on a job working, when the person running the job asks you to go and work on a unit that is turned on and has electricity running through it, and cannot be turned off because it will make the customer hot and sweaty, even though it is very unsafe to do so. He tells you that if you do not do it, he will send you home immediately for the rest of the day. What would be the most appropriate course of action to take in this situation?
